ANT's Army was established in 2014 following the loss of our child, Ashley Nicole Tucker, which inspired the name ANT. Our mission is to assist older foster children in Cecil and Harford Counties as they navigate their journey to independence.
Ashley aspired to become a child psychologist after graduation; she had a natural talent for connecting with children. Since she will never fulfill that dream, we wanted to improve the lives of children to celebrate and honor her memory.
With the support from Social Services for Cecil County, we learned about the children in the foster care system. The ones now totally on their own who may feel “forgotten”.
We began with small fundraisers to provide essential items and celebrate traditional holidays that families typically enjoy. And, through our partnership at Social Services, we were made aware of needs and tried to always find a way to meet them. As our efforts expanded, we started providing beds, dressers, and furniture for those moving into their own places, and even helped with reconnecting phone services during tough times.
Over the past decade, we have evolved to offer “care packages” to young adults transitioning to independent living. Tailored for those moving into apartments or renting rooms, these packages include essentials such as toiletries, pots and pans, dishes, glasses, silverware, and other items that help establish a foundation for their new lives. This kind of support is something parents would typically provide, but many of these young adults lack that opportunity. ANT’s Army aims to fill this crucial gap.
We maintain contact with many of the young adults we've assisted, and it’s heartening to witness their growth over the years. Many have become loving parents themselves.
While we will never fully heal from Ashley's loss, knowing we are continuing her passion by helping children who feel lost and alone brings us solace. We believe this is something Ashley would have undoubtedly pursued herself.
At ANT’s Army, our vision is a future where every young adult transitioning from foster care feels supported, valued, and equipped to lead an independent and fulfilling life. Through continued support, advocacy, and partnerships, we strive to create a world where every young person aging out of foster care has a strong foundation, a sense of belonging, and the tools necessary to build a bright and stable future.
At ANT’s Army, we understand that transitioning out of foster care into independent living can be overwhelming. Many young adults face this pivotal moment without the support systems others often take for granted. Our approach is rooted in addressing both the tangible and intangible needs that come with this transition. We provide essential household items that are often overlooked but crucial for creating a stable, comfortable home. From basic kitchen supplies and cleaning products to personal care items and small appliances, we ensure these young adults have the tools they need to feel secure and self-sufficient.
Over the years, ANT's Army has accomplished many important milestones in our mission to support the local foster kids. We have been given the opportunity to help over 100 kids who were in the midst of transitioning to independent living.
In 2021, we were awarded with "The William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award" which was presented to us in 2022 by Peter Franchot, the Comptroller of Maryland.
